KETCHUM, Idaho (AP) - Colleges and universities awarded $4 million in scholarships to more than 150 students from Idaho public high schools at the Hispanic Youth Symposium.
Public schools across the state chose students to attend the event in the resort town of Sun Valley on April 24-26 based on personal essays about their goals and how they expected the seminar to impact their future.
Nearly 300 students competed for scholarships from five western states at the symposium, which was founded as part of efforts to curb the high school dropout rate among Hispanic students.
The annual symposium has hosted workshops for more than 4,500 Hispanic students during the past 20 years.
