Hispanics more likely to download digital content
Hispanic Internet users downloading digital content at high rates
Phoenix Business Journal March 19, 2009
Hispanics are more likely than average to download digital content and adopt broadband, and Phoenix is the top U.S. market for Hispanic Internet use, according to a survey conducted by Scarborough Research.
The survey found Hispanic Internet users were 21 percent more likely to download digital content than the average user, and that 42 percent of those users had downloaded some digital content within the past 30 days.
Hispanics also are adopting broadband, with 68 percent of those Internet users having high-speed Internet connections. That number is up from 13 percent in 2002, about on par with national averages.
“Increased high-speed Internet access among Hispanics is opening the door for online businesses to establish brand loyalty with this consumer group,” said Gary Meo, senior vice president of digital media services at Scarborough. “Offering Hispanics new and creative ways to interact with a brand online -- particularly via downloaded digital content -- could go a long way in successfully marketing to the Hispanic adult.”
Phoenix was the strongest market surveyed for Hispanics downloading digital content, with more than 60 percent downloading some content in the past month. Other markets, such as Miami, have high penetrations of Hispanics with broadband connections.

AOL Latino reaches out to parents with technology
AOL Latino Launches TecnoPadres.com
NEW YORK - AOL Latino today launched TecnoPadres.com
PRESS RELEASE
NEW YORK - (Business Wire) AOL Latino today launched TecnoPadres.com, http://www.tecnopadres.com, a Spanish-language resource for parents who want to learn, understand and discuss technology as it relates to their children and their online safety. The new site is part of part of AOL Latino’s women's lifestyle network Tu Vida y Más, http://tuvida.aol.com.
“TecnoPadres.com will be a valuable resource for parents to learn how to keep their children safer online and to understand and relate to the technology that is increasingly shaping their children’s lives,” said Miguel Ferrer, Director of AOL Latino. “TecnoPadres is an important new venture for AOL Latino, not only because the Latino parent market is largely untapped but also because it shows we continue to be forward thinking when it comes to showing leadership within the Latino category.”
TecnoPadres.com will include content aimed at making parents more tech savvy and more equipped to understand the technology their children are using, be it social networking sites (Bebo, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter) or mobile devices (game units, cell phones). Features of the new site include:
∑ The Online Mom Content Partner – TechnoPadres.com will use translated content from TheOnlineMom.com, http://www.theonlinemom.com, to help make the experience more engaging for users. The Online Mom is a market leader in providing online and off-line tools to help parents better understand the technology that is now such a major part of their children's daily lives.
∑ Technology News – The latest, breaking news in the world of technology will help parents safeguard their children while on social networks, e-mail, chat rooms, etc.
∑ Lo Mejor De Esta Semana (Best of the Week) – This feature will link back to the site’s picks of the newest and most relevant weekly features in three popular areas: websites, helpful tips and games.
∑ Video Library for Common Technology Challenges – TecnoPadres.com will also include an embedded video player highlighting video clips on how parents can keep their kids safer online. One example is how parents can set parental controls. Shortly after launch, a resource guide of video clips will be made available.
AOL has long been a leader in providing parents resources to keep their children safer online. In September 2008, AOL launched SafetyClicks.com, http://www.safetyclicks.com, a new online safety education Web site. It also recently introduced an improved version of its free, downloadable parental controls software, http://parentalcontrols.aol.com, that gives parents tools they need to help protect their children from inappropriate or dangerous online material.
The launch of TecnoPadres.com is in conjunction with the launch of Bebo.com’s U.S. Latino portal, http://www.bebo.com/c/latino. This simultaneous launch further shows the integration of content across the three core businesses of AOL – MediaGlow, People Networks and Platform-A - and extends the reach of Bebo to AOL Latino consumers.
The announcement marks the third new site launched in 2009 by MediaGlow, AOL’s newly formed publishing business unit. MediaGlow plans to launch a total of 30 new targeted websites in 2009 as part of its plan to expand its global reach. As part of MediaGlow, AOL Latino, http://www.aollatino.com, had 1.6 million unique visitors according to January 2009 comScore Media Metrix data, ranking it as one of the top three bilingual portals for Hispanics, according to a custom-built category by AOL.

Hispanics like internet, English websites
U.S. Hispanics embrace web, prefer English language sites
by Helen Leggatt BizReport
U.S. Hispanics aren't being left behind in Internet circles, their online numbers are already large and continue to swell. As per other U.S. citizens, Hispanics are using the Internet for a wide variety of reasons including news, entertainment and social networking, according to the results of a recent Ipsos U.S. Hispanic Omnibus study.
A large number of U.S. Hispanics have access to the Internet and 63% access the Internet at least once a month, according to a recent Ipsos Hispanic Omnibus study. As per most other U.S. users, they are accessing the Internet for news, downloading music, researching purchases and keeping up with friends and family members.
The notion that Hispanics lack Internet access or realize the impact of the Internet has been 'smashed', said Cynthia Pelayo, Senior Research Manage with Ipsos.
"We know that millions of Hispanics are online, either at home or at work, and they are engaging in functions, often in higher numbers, than the general population. U.S. Hispanics understand the value of having access to the internet and they are not only turning to the internet for basic search functions, but for entertainment and to increase their knowledge of the world around them," she said.
When online, English is the language of preference among all Hispanic age groups, found the Ipsos survey, with 55% of all Hispanics saying so. One would imagine that many of the younger age groups would be more likely to prefer English, this is not so. Almost 40% of Hispanics aged 18-34 prefer Internet sites that are in Spanish.
"Today, many US Hispanics continue to speak primarily Spanish, among their peers, family and friends, to watch television in Spanish and to be involved in cultural community events that are mostly conducted in Spanish," said Pelayo. "Yet, the ability to utilize either language when needed is an innate skill and an advantage that many US Hispanics possess."
